Easter in the Tri-City – spring holidays on the Baltic Sea

Easter is a time of joy, rebirth and family gatherings. It is also a great time to go out for some fresh air and look for signs of spring. The Tri-City in the second half of April may appeal to you – warm rays of sunshine reflect in the waters of the Bay of Gdańsk, parks are filled with birdsong and historic streets are full of life.

This year I propose a slow holiday. A walk among flowering trees, afternoon coffee with a view of the sea, the silence of Easter morning among the sound of waves. Easter in the Tri-City is a great opportunity to combine tradition with active outdoor recreation. That is why I encourage you to create an opportunity for yourself and your loved ones to take a leisurely stroll among the charming corners of Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia, in addition to celebrating at the table. In this article I will suggest a few places worth visiting.

Easter walk around Gdańsk - tradition and history in the open air

You can start Easter in Gdańsk with a visit to the historical city centre. Walking through the streets of the Main Town, you will discover not only the wealth of architecture, but also feel the spirit of the holidays.

Where is it worth going?

  • St. Mary's Basilica - not only for Easter masses, but also to admire its monumental interior and stained glass windows and paintings depicting scenes of the Passion.
  • The Royal Route and Neptune's Fountain - in the old days, Easter fairs were held on Długi Targ, where merchants sold fresh produce, spices, meats and Easter pastries, and today it is a place full of life and is an ideal idea for a festive, city walk.
  • Granary Island - in keeping with the Easter symbolism of a time of new beginnings, I encourage you to visit Granary Island, which has literally been reborn in recent years after the destruction of war. Neglected for decades, today it is open to modernity while respecting tradition.

Spring in bloom, or a festive walk through Oliwa Park

Oliwa Park is a true pearl among the green areas of Gdańsk. Crossing its gates, you will enter a world where time passes more slowly. In April, the alleys are covered with the first flowers, and the treetops shimmer with delicate greenery. If you want to relax and feel spring with all your senses, this is where you will find its most beautiful face.

What is worth seeing?

  • Japanese Garden – a corner inspired by oriental harmony, where a traditional wooden gazebo and stone lanterns are surrounded by exotic plants. If the weather is good, you can witness the spectacular cherry blossoms, which will transport you to the Far East for a moment.
  • Lime Alley – monumental trees create a shaded tunnel, which in spring allows you to enjoy the warm rays of the sun breaking through the branches.
  • Oliwski Stream and ponds – a pleasant alternative to admire swimming ducks and swans. The sound of water soothes the senses and makes this place ideal for a moment of reflection.
  • The Abbots' Palace in Oliwa – a place where art meets history and nature (unfortunately, the Museum of Modern Art located there will be closed on holidays, but it is worth seeing the building itself).

Easter coffee with a sea view – a new tradition?

I encourage you to try something different this year instead of afternoon coffee at home or in a hotel and take your own thermos to the beach. Of course, there is no shortage of restaurants and cafes on the Tri-City beaches where you can celebrate the holidays with an aromatic drink in your hand, so all those thirsty for caffeine will find it in its best form. And all this while admiring the calm, springtime Bay of Gdańsk.

What is worth seeing? Three piers:

  • Pier in Sopot – when you enter the longest wooden pier in Europe, you will feel the space and elegance. Look around – in front of you is the historic Grand Hotel, and on the horizon, ships waiting to enter the port.
  • Pier in Gdańsk Brzeźno – if you are looking for a place for a quiet walk or a moment of relaxation with a view of the sea, this is the place. You can sit on one of the benches and listen to the sound of the waves.
  • Pier in Gdynia Orłowo – walking along the wooden pier, you will feel the unique atmosphere of this place. On one side, the gentle splash of waves, on the other, the majestic Orłowski Cliff, one of the most beautiful places for photos in the Tri-City, which is impressive at any time of year.

A soothing walk along the seaside – from Brzeźno to Orłowo

And if just sitting with a coffee on the beach or on the pier is not enough, I encourage you to go for a walk. I think that one of the best ways to feel spring is to take a walk along the Baltic Sea. The sound of the waves, the delicate smell of salt in the air and the view of the endless water make it really relaxing.

The route between Gdańsk and Gdynia is perfect for a family walk or a solitary moment of reflection. Especially since the beach is wide and sandy, and there is a walking and cycling path along the coastline. Along the way, you can find amber or simply enjoy the silence interrupted by the cries of seagulls. It is worth venturing all the way to the Orłowski Cliff - one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Poland. Steep slopes falling straight into the sea, and the nearby wooden pier and fishing boats give it a unique charm.

Christmas tradition in the Oliwa Archcathedral and Wejherowo Calvary

If you want to experience the holidays in the spirit of Christian tradition, consider attending a service in the Oliwa Archcathedral – one of the most important churches in northern Poland, full of monuments and a solemn atmosphere. Perhaps this will be an opportunity to listen to the famous Oliwa organ, the sound of which fills the entire temple.

To delve even deeper into tradition and faith, you can go to Kashubia. In many villages, old customs are still cultivated. I encourage you to visit Kalwaria Wejherowska – an ideal place for reflection and spiritual experience of Holy Week – which I described in an earlier article.

Easter in the Tri-City – time for a new tradition

Does Easter have to mean sitting at the table? Not necessarily! You can spend it traditionally, in accordance with the principles of faith, among family and friends, but also taking into account activity and closeness to nature. The Tri-City offers plenty of opportunities - from celebrating holidays in impressive churches, through family spring walks by the sea, to discovering local traditions and history.

Regardless of how you decide to spend this holiday, I wish you that it will be full of joy, peace and beautiful moments!
