Top 5 holiday attractions of Sobieszewska Island

The long-awaited vacation for many of us has just begun! If you are wondering whether it is worth going to the Polish seaside, I will answer straight away - of course it is! However, I advise you to choose well so that the destination suits your needs. And well, in my opinion, it can mean, among others: the direction of Sobieszewska Island :)

Sobieszewska Island, located in the immediate vicinity of Gdańsk, will satisfy both nature and active recreation lovers. Whether you're looking for peace or adrenaline, you'll find something for yourself.

Why it's worth it - Sobieszewska Island in a few words

The Polish coast offers unforgettable holidays full of various attractions and opportunities to relax. Peaceful, picturesque beaches are perfect for those who want to relax away from the hustle and bustle. The proximity to nature and clean air promote health and activity, while stays in seaside resorts promote entertainment. What's most beautiful - by choosing the Baltic Sea as your holiday destination, you can enjoy the diversity and create memories that will last a lifetime.

And among the numerous seaside destinations – her. Sobieszewska Island is a hidden Baltic gem, perfect for those who want peace and contact with nature. Extensive sandy beaches, surrounded by picturesque landscapes, invite you to relax and sunbathe. Nature reserves such as Ptasi Raj and Mewia Łacha offer unforgettable encounters with wildlife. Sports and activity enthusiasts will find bicycle trails, running and Nordic walking routes, and those of you who love water will be able to try their hand at kayaking or take part in a cruise.

Sounds like Top 5 attractions? See for yourself :)

Wide, sandy beaches - paradise on Earth

The beaches of Sobieszewska Island are some of the most beautiful on the Polish coast. Wide, sandy and often empty, they offer excellent conditions for relaxation. These beaches are ideal for families with children thanks to the gentle shelving into the sea and clean, well-kept sands.

In addition to typical beach activities, such as sunbathing or swimming in the sea, it is also worth trying volleyball, frisbee or... flying a kite. Importantly, in Sobieszew you will not find the crowds typical of more popular seaside resorts, which translates into even better regeneration and greater opportunities to spend time the way we like :)

White Flag, Red Flag and Blue Flag

Regular visitors to guarded swimming areas, both inland and sea, probably know the first two flags very well. We all hope that a white flag will fly on the beach, signaling that it is safe to swim. The situation becomes a bit more complicated when a red flag appears on the rescue observation tower. This means that the conditions do not allow for safe swimming, so the lifeguard will strictly prohibit beachgoers from entering the water.

There are several reasons for such situations, but fortunately, better water exchange due to the location closer to the open sea than in the case of the Bay of Gdańsk (beaches in Gdynia and Sopot), makes Stogi in Gdańsk and especially the beaches on Sobieszewska Island much more open. They are often the only ones on the Tricity map with a white flag.

The Blue Flag, however, has no connection with the current swimming conditions on the beach. It is one of the most recognizable eco-labels in the world, i.e. awards granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In the 2024 season, this distinction was awarded to facilities in 51 countries, including:

  • Sopot Kamienny Potok-Koliba bathing area,
  • Gdańsk Stogi bathing area,
  • Gdańsk Sobieszewo bathing area.

When planning your holiday, it is worth taking this distinction into account :)

Let's observe birds in the Ptasi Raj and Mewia Łacha nature reserves

Nature reserves on Sobieszewska Island are a real treasure for nature lovers. Ptasi Raj, located on the western end of the island, is a place where you can observe various species of birds, especially during migration. Educational paths, special platforms and observation towers enable comfortable and safe observation of birds in their natural habitat. In turn, Mewia Łacha, known for the occurrence of gray seals, offers a unique opportunity to observe these mammals in their natural habitat.

A walk through the reserves is the perfect opportunity to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in wild nature. Protecting these areas allows them to preserve their uniqueness and biodiversity, which makes them a unique destination for holiday trips. The island is one of the most important places in Poland for ornithologists, attracting bird lovers from all over the world. From spring to autumn you can see hundreds of species of birds here, often really rare. That is why it is the site of numerous ornithological events and workshops that explain the secrets of birds' lives and teach how to observe them without disturbing their peace.

Water sports: kayaking

Sobieszewska Island is a convenient location for water sports enthusiasts. So I suggest you go on a kayak trip around the island (for the more experienced) or paddle on the Wisła Śmiała and Wisła Martwa rivers.

In Sobieszewo, at Przegalińska Street, there is a kayak marina on the Młynówka Canal and a kayak rental. The infrastructure, i.e. a picnic shelter, a fireplace and a parking lot, enable culinary relaxation after active paddling.

After booking a kayak in advance, you can sail towards the Bay of Gdańsk, passing under the Bridge of the 1000th Anniversary of Poland's Regained Independence, along the marina, the pier at the entrance to the Bird Paradise Reserve and near the beautiful stone causeway. People who are more experienced and confident in their skills can move further towards the open waters of the Bay of Gdańsk, overcoming the emerging waves and, making a loop, return from Przekop Wisły to the marina.

The rest can turn around the National Sailing Center towards the Gdańsk Shipyard Yacht Club and the Sobieszew marina to reach the departure point again. The route described in this way is approximately 12 km long. Of course, you can shorten it and make a smaller loop, perfect for the first encounter with a kayak or for active families with children :)

Following Wincenty Pol's bicycle path

Bicycle tours are a great way to get to know local nature and culture and to reach places that are less accessible by car. Sobieszewska Island will prove useful to cyclists. Numerous forest paths and bicycle trails lead through picturesque landscapes, nature reserves, and along the dunes.

If you want to feel the charm of Sobieszewska Island for yourself, I encourage you to ride the blue bicycle trail. Wincenty Pol. The trail is 24 km long and loops around the entire island. It leads along both asphalt roads with low traffic intensity, dirt roads and sometimes very sandy forest paths. It is best to overcome it on a gravel bike, trekking bike, cross bike or mountain bike. Fortunately, the level of difficulty is low, so with a bit of enthusiasm and good will, and enough time, it should be suitable for the vast majority of tourists.

Why is it worth it? Mainly because we are able to get to know the island from different sides in one visit, observing nature, architecture and technical facilities. I'm thinking mainly about:

  • drawbridge in Sobieszew,
  • lock in Przegalin,
  • Forsterówka, a 90-year-old larch manor house built on the orders of Adolf Hitler,
  • Minor Basilica of Our Lady of La Salette
  • rushes with rare and protected plants, coastal forests, dunes,
  • observation tower - the Kazimierz water reservoir, regulating the water pressure on the island.

I strongly encourage you to stop and visit the reservoir and admire the panorama of the Bay of Gdańsk (if the visibility is good, you can reach Hel), sandy beaches, dune forests, and finally the landscape of Żuławy (Attention! Due to the safety of the facility, entries are free, but limited .So it's worth making a reservation in advance.)

From the deck of the yacht through the Baltic Sea oasis of peace

A yacht cruise around Sobieszewska Island is a perfect opportunity to discover its most beautiful places. It is not only a chance to relax and break away from everyday worries, but also to experience true closeness to nature, even when, for example, you do not have the opportunity to row a kayak yourself. Picturesque views, a variety of fauna and flora and a peaceful atmosphere create ideal conditions for rest and regeneration.
