The Gdańsk Christmas Market is an event with a beautiful tradition dating back to the 17th century, and at the same time constantly developing and meeting the modern times. This year's edition will start on November 22 and will last until December 23, 2024. For a month in the historic city center, we will have the opportunity to feel the unique, festive atmosphere.
Is it worth seeing it for yourself? Definitely yes! For years, the Gdańsk Christmas Market has been among the European leaders. In last year's European Best Christmas Market 2023 ranking, it took second place, and this year, maybe with your help, it wants to fight for the laurels of the best fair on the old continent :)
The Christmas stands are located at Targ Węglowy and on the streets of Tkacka, Przedbramie and Bogusławskiego. For years, we have been finding handicrafts there – unique items made by local artists and craftsmen, such as amber jewelry, leather goods, ceramics or Christmas tree decorations. In keeping with tradition, there will also be regional delicacies based on family recipes.
It has been a long-standing tradition that when dusk falls on Gdańsk, light illuminations will take care of the magical atmosphere of strollers. At the beginning of December, around 160 light figures will shine in a dozen or so locations in the city, creating unique compositions. Last year, these included: Floating lilies in Oliwa Park and the port crane and tall shipyard cranes in Brzeźno. Also arousing delight: the fairy-tale rocking horse on Tkacka Street, the lighthouse makers in Oruński Park and the gate illumination in Kuźniczki Park. A novelty was the 6-meter-high Carillion on Young Poland Square. What will this year's edition bring? We can only wait patiently. But – patience will certainly be rewarded soon, because family (and not only) walks along the illuminated alleys are one of the most popular Christmas activities.
Certainly – to see them all, you need to have energy and… eat many pierogi, slices of cheesecake and drink a lot of borscht beforehand. But what wouldn't you do to immortalize such beautiful winter decorations in your memory and on photos.
